What Is The Point Of Having Three Bass Drums?

I know two bass drums is simply for double bass drumming, but I keep seeing drummers that have three. What's the point of this?

First off, this is a pretty good question. Take a look at Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater. He is a drumming god.
The reason he has 3 bass drums is because his drumset has so many different things on it. He wants to do a double bass, but can’t reach the other drums on his set when he does this.
    Here’s a picture.

He does use a double bass method, but he can’t reach other drums that he wants to use because his set is so big. Hence… three bass drums.

each bass drum can be tuned differently for different effects (e.g., tight, loose, looser).
